Advice for new writers in no particular order:
Write. Seriously, don’t wait to “be a better writer” before writing your story! I did that for years and I never wrote! Just sit down and write. Edit. Rewrite. Edit again. The process of writing that story will make you a better writer! And then, maybe one day, you’ll go back and rewrite it again!
Read. Also a common piece of advice but so important! How are you going to find new techniques for story-telling/structure/etc. if you don’t look at how other writers are doing it? Read a bit of everything and anything (no need to finish if you don’t like it!).
Steal other people’s style. This is the most fun writing game I play. Read a book or short story and write something in that style. Find your favorite excerpt and analyze why you like it. Is it the tone? Is it the POV? Maybe you like how the author describes the setting, light to object to feeling. Try and take what you like from their work and apply it to a quick writing warm up for you! Write about your day in that style. It’s the fastest way to add more tools to your writing arsenal!
Watch people. That sounds a little creepy, but actors do it all the time! You need references to write just like artists need references to draw. Watch how someone tugs on their clothing while they’re waiting in line, where someone looks when they’re on the phone, how quickly someone breaks eye contact after laughing. Readers love to “see” how a character feels through body language, so keep a look out for great references!
Talk/listen to people. TV shows and books tend to use what I call (and maybe other people call) “fiction dialogue.” Fiction dialogue is stripped down real-world dialogue. It lacks stutters, tangents, and pauses to keep the flow of the story moving quickly. That’s great, but if you emulate fiction dialogue, you’re going to lose some realism in your writing and your characters may come out a little stiff. You’ll be able to find your mix of fiction to real world dialogue in your story, but to do that you need to study both!
Experience things. I personally don’t sit inside all day and write. I have another job, I hang out with friends, I wander the city and just look. I end up at concerts in the park, at protests, at new libraries. I make new friends (and enemies) and I try new things. All the while I’m thinking How can I use this in my writing? Will my character’s heart race like mine? Will they have this conversation? Will they go to this place? Use yourself as a reference!
That’s all for now, but the above is what helped me get to the level I’m at today! Hope it helps!
Weirdly anti-millennial articles have scraped the bottom of the barrel so hard that they are now two feet down into the topsoil
its so wild like “this generation with no fucking money is learning to prioritize essentials” and all these chucklefucks can write is advertisements for these companies
at least our jeans won’t tear at the seams after two washes
FUCK FABRIC SOFTENER IT’S UTTERLY POINTLESS

FUCK THE ENTIRE LAUNDRY INDUSTRY
*Fuck The Entire Laundry Industry Recipe
1 cup Washing Soda (not Baking Soda. Different things.)
1 cup Borax (not Boric Acid. Also a different thing.)
½ cup – 1 cup grated bar soap (you can use literally anything. I often use Ivory because it’s easy to get and I find it works well, a lot of people like Fels-Naptha, which is an actual laundry bar. Some people use Dr. Bronner’s. Really does not fucking matter.)
After grating your soap, combine all ingredients. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. Use maybe a ¼ cup per load.
^^^ I’ve done this for years now and it works as well as any store bought detergent
WHAT Thank you, tumblr user awfullydull! Your URL does no justice to the good advice you give!
Also you can MAKE your own washing soda very VERY cheaply.
Step one: acquire $5 bag of baking soda from Costco.
Step two: lay that motherfucking baking soda out on a baking tray.
Step three: bake the baking soda on a tray in an oven at 400° for 1 hour (to make the moisture evaporate, leaving washing soda)
Step four: revel in how easy and cheap it is to make your own washing soda, and maybe take a moment to be angry that the industry upcharges the fuck out of something that is so easy to make.
I see some of y’all complaining about static and/or wanting nice smelling laundry. Go to a craft store, find 100% wool yarn balls. If it doesn’t come in a ball, ask an employee to make it into a tight ball for you. Wash in the washing machine to make it felted. Remove from washer, add a few drops of essential oil to the ball, allow to seep in. Dry with clothing. Doesn’t need to be rewashed ever, and if it stops smelling, add few more drops of essential oil. Bam, reusable dryer sheets.
the world as we know it has ended and mother nature starts taking back what’s hers. there are no zombies or cannibals or murderous bandits. the most valued members of the community are those who know how to garden and farm, sew and weave, treat wounds, work wood or build with bricks, cook from scratch.
people bond together to begin rebuilding instead of killing each other. everyone teaches each other whatever they do know and works together to figure out the stuff none of them know. books become incredibly valued resources because they’re often the only way to learn critical information. if someone is elderly, disabled, or otherwise unable to work at the same level as most of the community, they’re taken care of by the others, not told any sort of “survival of the fittest” bs.
as the generations ware on, communities begin expanding into small cities. some of the settlements even find ways to repurpose solar or wind power on a small scale and have electricity in some of their buildings. storytellers wander the countryside telling tales of the old world in return for some hot stew or a place to rest for the night, and the mythos of the new world start to incorporate elements of the past. the only thing that remains constant is that humans survive, and they do it by working together.

In Sun/Moon, they removed the usual methods of shiny hunting such as the DexNav, PokéRadar, and Horde Battles.
But they introduced a new mechanic, which is an S.O.S. battle.
When you encounter a Pokémon in the wild, when its HP is low, it may call for help. Usually, a second Pokémon of the same species will appear next to the original Pokémon.
There’s an item called the Adamant Orb that you can purchase from the PokéMart after completing Mallow’s trial. This item, when used in battle, will make the wild Pokémon nervous and more likely to call for help. This means increased chance of a shiny Pokémon.
People use this to their advantage, it’s like chaining of sorts. People have found this method to work.
I believe the chances of finding a shiny in Sun/Moon are 1 in 4,000.
